Why and How do eyelashes grow?

In addition to beauty, eyelashes have the function of protecting the eyes from foreign objects and triggering the blink reflex.

The number of eyelashes on the upper eyelid varies from person to person, ranging from 90-150. The lower eyelid has 60-80 hairs.

The eyelashes of the upper eyelid grow in two to three rows. Compared to hair, the eyelash is wider in shape. In addition, the eyelash does not lose pigment and does not turn gray with age. The eyelashes of the upper eyelid can grow up to 12 mm long, the average length is about 8 mm.

We can stimulate eyelash growth with various eyelash serums, but this does not guarantee density - this is genetically individual for everyone! Eyelashes appear "thicker" after long-term use of the serum because the serum also helps very tiny and barely noticeable eyelash hairs become stronger and longer.

Each natural eyelash has 3 growth phases, which last an average of 5-11 months.

Anagen phase or growth phase. The hair grows actively for 1-2 months. During this phase, the genetic pigment of the hair is transferred. About 40% of the upper eyelashes and 15% of the lower eyelashes are in the growth phase at the same time. When each hair reaches a certain length, growth stops.

Catagen phase or transition phase. Eyelash growth stops, the hair follicle shrinks. This phase lasts an average of 2 weeks.

Telogen phase, or resting phase. Eyelashes rest and remain in this phase for an average of 100 days, until the hair falls out on its own. Then the anagen phase, or growth phase, begins again.

Why do we lose eyelashes every day?

The reason is that each eyelash is in an individual growth cycle - in the growth phase, in the transition phase, or in the resting phase.

Interesting fact ‼️

Eyelashes grow an average of 0.15 mm per day.
