What does eyelash extension glue consist of?

The main ingredient in eyelash extension glue, cyanoacrylate, gives the glue its adhesive properties. This ingredient is used in all eyelash glues, even those designed for sensitive or allergic eyes.

Eyelash glues contain between 80 and over 90% cyanoacrylate. Thus, cyanoacrylate is the main ingredient in all professional eyelash glues and in fact, it is the base material for almost all instant glues.

This material ensures that the glue dries within seconds and holds it firmly in place.


How does cyanoacrylate work?


Cyanoacrylates harden when exposed to water, so the humidity of the room plays a major role in the drying process. The glue hardens faster in high humidity and vice versa. Once hardened, this ingredient is harmless to health and does not irritate the skin. The hardened glue is also reasonably waterproof and can be washed with water to soothe irritated skin.

In the dry season, the glue takes longer to harden, so exposure to fumes and irritants is longer. This fact must be taken into account.

Eyelash adhesives containing cyanoacrylates are generally safe when used according to instructions.


Poly(methyl methacrylate) or PMMA


Simply put, poly(methyl methacrylate) or PMMA is the part of the glue that forms a strong, long-lasting bond. So, PMMA is what ensures that the lashes stay in place for a long time.

PMMA is used in eyelash extension adhesive to strengthen the cyanoacrylate and thus the adhesion of the eyelash extension.

Cyanoacrylate, along with poly(methyl methacrylate), make up the three most important properties of eyelash glue: fast drying, an immediate bond that grips the lashes, and then a long-term, strong holding bond that ensures several weeks of wear.

In summary, cyanoacrylate ensures the eyelash glue hardens quickly and PMMA ensures its longer-lasting adhesiveness.


Hydroquinone


Hydroquinone helps prevent the eyelash glue from solidifying in the glue bottle and prevents the glue from hardening before you start using it. This ingredient itself is found in very small amounts in the glue so that its effect only works when needed – while the glue is being stored.

However, when the glue is put into use and exposed to humidity, the hydroquinone must be removed and the glue must be able to solidify. This is why the opening of the glue bottles is very small.


Black soot


The glue's deep black color is due to black carbon. This ingredient is only found in black glues and is absent in clear glues. Clear glue is ideal if you have a carbon allergy. Black carbon is a solid form of carbon that can be used as a coloring agent to give your eyelash glue a rich, dark black finish.


Latex in eyelash extension glue?


Latex helps increase the adhesive's resistance to water and oil, which in turn helps create a longer hold. Latex (natural rubber) causes allergic reactions in some people, so it is not recommended to use an adhesive containing latex.

Many adhesives instead contain elastomer (synthetic rubber), which is rubber made in a laboratory. Elastomer does not cause latex allergies, but provides excellent viscosity, elasticity, and durability.


Formaldehyde-free eyelash extension glue


Formaldehyde is not an ingredient in eyelash glue. It is formed as a byproduct of the breakdown of other materials in the glue, and exposure to the small amounts of formaldehyde produced when using eyelash extensions is not harmful to health.

For formaldehyde to be harmful to humans, it must be inhaled in large quantities over a long period of time, and the conventional eyelash extension application process does not allow for this.


Is there a cyanoacrylate-free eyelash glue?


The answer is no. Without cyanoacrylate, the adhesive loses its main function - its ability to stick.
